HH-3E series is no longer in service with the United States Air Force but gained considerable fame in the Vietnam War for its many rescues of downed aircrews in the conflict. The system featured a stretched fuselage and was based on the standard Naval Sea King helicopter. The United States Air Force version also featured a large freight ramp at rear for easy loading.

The crew cabin consisted of four operations personnel and could seat an additional 15 passengers. The United States Coast Guard also fielded a similar system designated as the HH-3F Pelican which has also been retired from active frontline service. Despite this, countries all over the world continue to field the system in some regard
